The Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology in Utrecht, which opened in 2016, is a unique center where all highly complex care and research for children with cancer comes together. However, as well as care and research, education and training are also essential activities. As a Learning Advisor, Joàn is involved in all stages of devising appropriate solutions for learning and development needs, from analysis to design and development to implementation, impact measurement, and overall project management. Joàn: "As anAcademy, we focus on developing professionals who deliver the best of themselves daily so that they can contribute to our mission to cure every child with cancer and give optimal quality of life. My mission is to help others do their work with more enjoyment and results. I believe that learning is one of the keys to that success and that every human being has what it takes to continue to develop."

Putting learning into practice

Joàn believes it is key to always look for a broad mix of (digital) interventions to connect to the learner's workflow as much as possible. "That's when the intervention has the most effect. A successful intervention encourages the desired (behavioral) change. So, it's important to connect with the target group and find a suitable learning solution that will equip employees both as individuals and as professionals." The 5 Moments of Need® methodology helps her with that. "You only really learn if you also put what you learned into practice! What I love about the 5 Moments of Need® is that you make the return on learning measurable and can link the learning, development, and training to the performance of the employees."

"My mission is to help others do their work with more enjoyment and results. I believe that learning is one of the keys to that success and that every human being has what it takes to continue to develop."

Better performance support design

The Designer Certificate programs of The 5 Moments of Need® Academy Netherlands provide innovative solutions and tools to implement 70:20:10 in practice and make informal learning in the workflow a reality. Princess Máxima Center has already been working with the 5 Moments of Need® for several years. "To get to the same level as my colleagues, I thought it would be a good idea to follow the certificate program. The training gives me more practical tools to better shape the Performance Support within our organization. It's great how involved and passionate the facilitators are about the methodology. I notice that I have also become more critical. Indeed, Performance Support might not always be the most appropriate learning intervention. These discussions aare enlightening and good to have. It means I'm better equipped to place themethodologyin our organization. Where can we use this properly? Where would it be a good fit? And where not? The 5 Moments of Need® suits our healthcare professionals well, and that's great to see."

Relevant practical assignment

How do you ensure that knowledge and information are relevant to the employee and his role? How do you ensure employees learn at precisely the moment it's needed? The Designer Certificate program gives thorough insights. In addition, there is practical work activity directly relevant to your organization. Joàn: "I am working on a very current practical assignment. At Princess Máxima Center, we are working on a significant project where nurses (just like the doctors) work with EPAs (entrustable professional activities). This has an impact not only on the training but also on the guidance and assessment of students. I am currently redesigning the students' workflow guidance.

"The training gives me more practical tools to better shape the Performance Support within our organization."

Would you like to design workplace learning solutions? We start September 20th, 2022!

On the program, you will learn all the ins and outs of the 5 Moments of Need® methodology developed by Conrad Gottfredson and Bob Mosher in about six months. With this methodology, you create learning solutions that include formal learning (the '10' in 70:20:10), social learning through connection with colleagues (the '20'), and learning in the workflow (the '70'). In a class size of up to sixteen L&D professionals, you work towards achieving the 5 Moments of Need® Designer Certificate. Of course, during the program, you are supported with a performance support solution and will work on a practical work-based assignment.

A tip from Joan for participating in the program

"Interacting with your subject matter experts is crucial and makes working with the methodology the most fun thing there is, in my opinion. It then becomes clear why we use the 5 Moments of Need®, but also why I do this work: helping people develop a step further; wonderful!"
