Albert Schweitzer hospital

Workplace learning solution for nurses on the COVID-19 ward at Albert Schweitzer hospital.

The Challenge

As a top clinical hospital, Albert Schweitzer hospital (ASz) in Dordrecht trains its staff every day to ensure they remain qualified and competent. Due to the rapid increase in COVID-19 patients and the absence of nurses due to infections, the ASz Learning Center had to respond quickly to the growing demand for care, creating an urgent need for COVID-19 training. On the dedicated COVID-19 ward, a workplace learning solution had to be immediately available, allowing staff from other departments to step in and assist.

The Solution

With the help of Digital Coach AskDelphi a workplace learning solution was launched within two weeks. Since ASz had already been working daily on assessments and training in the workplace for several years, and had an environment built according to 5 Moments of Need® methodology they were able to act quickly. The workplace learning solution provides nurses with direct access to relevant content on the job, tailored to their role, location, and personal preferences. Inspired by the AskErasmusMC portal of Erasmus MC, the available COVID-19 content was reviewed by internal experts, adjusted to ASz standards and protocols, and went live immediately.

The Impact

» Immediate usability: Nurses on the COVID-19 ward had access to up-to-date information from day one, allowing them to act appropriately and safely at all times.
» User-friendly and practical: The new learning solution has been very well received; employees appreciate being able to refresh their knowledge and find the Digital Coach user-friendly.
» Positive feedback and further development: The positive initial feedback forms the basis for further optimization of the content and the expansion of the workplace learning solution to other roles within the hospital.

Future plan

Based on the success of this COVID-19 pilot, the workplace learning solution is being further expanded. In addition to supporting nurses, ASz is focusing on other roles, such as anesthesia staff, recovery nurses, and medical assistants. Moreover, it remains essential to continuously maintain the Digital Coach and keep the content up-to-date to ensure that workplace learning remains effective and reliable.

Nurses have little time to attend classroom training, and they learn more quickly in the context of their work environment or from experts in their department.
