From traditional training to innovative training with a workplace learning solution for the Duty Officer Investigation (OvD-R) at the Dutch National Police
Society is changing rapidly, and so is police work. The Police Academy offers employees many opportunities to continue learning and developing. Since knowledge and skills quickly become outdated, the police want to address this by linking formal learning with informal learning. Training must be based on continuous education; lifelong learning! The challenge for the police is to bridge the ‘gap’ between being adequately trained (initial training to become an officer) and being fully competent, while bringing learning and development closer to the workplace.
Xprtise has been asked to set up a pilot for workplace learning for the new training program of the Duty Officer Investigation (OvD-R). The 5 Moments of Need®-methodology has been fully integrated into the learning journey. By using adaptive learning through Drillster and Performance Support software such as AskDelphi, theory and practice are cleverly combined. As a result, employees can independently practice with the learning materials before and after the training, reducing the traditional theory week to just one and a half days, while creating more space for practical training.
» More efficient training: The two-week training program has been shortened by a full week due to the pilot. The reduction in theoretical training time allows more room for practical, hands-on training.
» Higher user acceptance: Police officers appreciate the immediate and accessible support; 75% of users report that AskDelphi makes working according to procedures easier, and 100% find Drillster helpful and user-friendly.
» Improved standardization of work processes: The workplace learning solution contributes to the standardization of work processes and provides a current knowledge system that offers continuous support.
A simulation, supported by Performance Support and adaptive learning, has proven to be a powerful learning tool. Based on the positive pilot results, further integration of workplace learning into police training is being considered. The insights gained will be used to better connect formal and informal learning and to optimize future learning journeys. Ongoing maintenance and updating of the knowledge system remains a priority.
The new approach to training is designed to help our students take control of their own learning process.
