Fast, efficient, and innovative training with a workplace learning solution for operators at Aviko.
Aviko, one of the largest European producers of potato products, has its own training center where factory employees undergo several training sessions before starting on the production floor. However, the company also wants to support their operators as effectively as possible in and during their daily work. The existing training program includes various formal learning interventions such as e-learnings and classroom training, making knowledge retention a challenge. This leads to repeated training cycles that consume a lot of time and resources. Therefore, Aviko sought an innovative approach to enable learning on the job, with a view to the rollout to new factories in Belgium and China.
Together with Xprtise, a workplace learning solution based on the 5 Moments of Need®-methodology was developed. A Proof of Concept (PoC) and a pilot project on one of Aviko’s packaging lines were central to this initiative. The solution includes a workplace analysis to map the current processes and break down the work into concrete tasks, processes, and steps. Critical task analyses and the development of Performance Support tools were key, helping operators perform their tasks precisely when they need it.
» Increased efficiency: Operators can perform their tasks faster and more consistently with access to relevant information at the moment of need.
» Better knowledge retention: By integrating learning into the workplace, there is less knowledge decay, and repeated training cycles are reduced.
» Positive employee experience: Both operators and production leaders appreciate the accessibility and usability of the new learning solutions, resulting in higher employee satisfaction.
Aviko now offers an in-company 5 Moments of Need® Designer Certificate program to train their employees in independently developing workplace learning solutions. The next steps include expanding the solution to other production lines and integrating new technologies such as Augmented Reality (AR) and hands-free devices to further innovate learning within Aviko. Since concrete projects are already being worked on during the in-company training, progress is being made quickly.
Using the 5 Moments of Need® methodology, we have developed a workplace learning solution that our operators embrace even more than we, as the L&D department, had initially expected.
