The Challenge

In addition to care and research, education and training are a key activity at the Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology in Utrecht. The organization is growing rapidly, making it even more important to effectively manage the training and development of healthcare professionals. The Princess Máxima Center’s goal is to anchor formal learning more deeply in daily practice and on the job, making it more impactful, enjoyable, and effective.

The Solution

Inspired by the Performance Journey at the Learning conference in Orlando, the Princess Máxima Center began using the 5 Moments of Need® methodology.

Ten professionals participated in an in-company 5 Moments of Need® Designer program, during which three workplace learning solutions (pilots) were developed:

• Brachytherapy within the Nurse Practitioner training for pediatric oncology.
• Administration of cytostatics (chemotherapy).
• Safe handling of hazardous substances in the LAB and Research.

Employees now have quick access to relevant information via a Digital Coach, tailored to their experience and role.

» Better-aligned learning interventions: A balanced mix of workplace learning, e-learning, classroom training, and interactive video.

» Fast and effective knowledge transfer: Employees learn exactly what is needed at the right time and in the right place.

» Stronger collaboration: Teams from Care, Academy, and Quality work together on a shared learning strategy, leading to widely supported knowledge development.

Future plan

The new workplace learning solution is supported by Digital Coach AskDelphi and Drillster and integrated with the NetDimensions LMS. The Princess Máxima Center’s goal for the future is to make learning even more effective and engaging. The current (Netflix) generation primarily learns ‘just in time’ and ‘just in place.’ They prefer to learn by watching rather than reading. The new learning solutions are being adapted to this preference, making learning more attractive and efficient.

We are working towards more efficient and challenging learning, where collaboration between Care, Academy, and Quality is even more central.
