The Challenge

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in March 2020, Erasmus MC in Rotterdam needed a fast, accessible way to support healthcare professionals both within and outside Erasmus MC with up-to-date knowledge, protocols, and guidelines regarding the coronavirus. The pandemic required a flexible and efficient approach for retraining and providing crucial information ‘in the moment of need.

The Solution

Within ten working days, Erasmus MC and Xprtise developed the workplace learning solution Ask Erasmus MC. This Digital Coach, created in AskDelphi and based on the 5 Moments of Need®-methodology, provides healthcare professionals with direct access to relevant COVID-19 information and practical support during their work.

The Impact

» Quick and easy access to knowledge: Employees can find the necessary information within two clicks or ten seconds.
» Continuous development: Content is constantly updated based on feedback from the field. Additionally, employees contribute their own knowledge, such as work instructions, clinical lessons, checklists, and other materials they have developed.
» Collaboration and knowledge sharing: The solution has led to increased openness among hospitals in the Netherlands, promoting the sharing of expertise and materials related to the coronavirus.

Future plan

Erasmus MC is further expanding the workplace learning solution, including adapting the formal training for work supervisors and practical trainers according to the steps of the 5 Moments of Need® methodology. Work is also being done on the Didactics training program. For this, the tasks of trainers, guest lecturers, scientific lecturers, and student assistants have been analyzed. The goal is to foster collaboration within Erasmus MC as an academy and in medicine, creating a unified training program for trainers.

The COVID-19 solution has led to increased openness among other hospitals and healthcare professionals to share their knowledge and information, learn from each other, and exchange knowledge as needed.
